In the mountains above Aoste (Italy) Father Elias Leyds c.s.j. continues his reflections on the importance of the distinction of the Soul, next to the body and the mind.

August 2022 – Fr Elias c.s.j. continues the conversation on the soul. He elaborates on the words in the liturgy for the Holy Eucharist, in which we say, “Lord I am not worthy that you should come to me, but speak only one word and I will be healed”.

He criticises this translation because the original Latin uses the word “anima” or “soul”. Does that matter? Why does he find the translation of ‘I’for ‘soul’ superficial?

When we talk about who we are, our identity, we can distinguish three levels in our exsistence. In our ‘I’ we have the body, the soul and the mind. Fr Elias explains how, in the Eucharist, it is not the body or the mind that are healed, but the soul.

Who is not worthy? ‘Who we are’ is about body, soul and spirit alike.

So: Lord, I am not worthy, thay you come under my roof, but only speak and my soul will be healed’
